The Best Crystal Golf Cart Batteries For 36-, 48- & 72-Volt Battery Systems

The core and key component of every golf cart is its battery, and choosing the right type of battery is crucial to ensuring that your golf cart is always in top shape and performs to the very best of its ability. With a crystal golf cart battery, you are guaranteed to get the absolute best out of your golf cart.

What are the Crystal Batteries?

Crystal Batteries™ are a unique technology from Netherlands-based Ampowr that overcomes conventional battery problems by having a nearly solid-state electrolyte. This allows the battery to be discharged deeper, cycle more often, has a longer lifetime, and can withstand extreme temperatures.

The patented Crystal technology uses a unique advanced formula, a new type of composite SiO2 electrolyte developed to completely replace traditional sulfuric acid solutions.

How do Crystal Batteries work?

The patented technology found in Crystal Batteries uses a unique micro-porous high absorbent mat (AGM), high-purity lead calcium selenium plates, and a safe SiO2 electrolyte solution. The solution solidifies into a white crystalline powder when charged and discharged. This in turn improves the product’s application and safety performance, which means the batteries are more resilient to deeper discharges in extreme temperatures, allowing the batteries to recover to full capacity repeatedly.

Crystal Batteries are cleaner and safer than other technologies with less acid, no cadmium, and no antimony, are 99% recyclable, and classified as non-hazardous for good transport.

How to choose the right battery for a 36-, 48- & 72-volt Golf Cart?

The EV range is our electric vehicle range of batteries, specifically designed for demanding power needs like electric motors and vehicles, internal transport systems, industrial cleaning machines, golf carts, caravans, 4WD, and many more.

  • The EV range has a unique plate design to deliver faster discharge capability whilst retaining the advantages of a deep cycle battery, however, the cycles of the battery are reduced;
  • Has been designed to work specifically with electric motors;
  • Has a much thicker busbar structure better suited for high-discharge high-cyclic applications and is capable of high-power delivery more easily;
  • Is ideal for motive applications.

The electric vehicle range includes 6V, 8V, and 12V batteries which vary from 27Ah to 265Ah capacity.

Before we go any further, you’ll need to know that your battery system does not consist of one battery; it consists of a series of batteries each ranging from 6 to 12 volts.

As an example, six 8-volt batteries will give you a 48-volt battery system. The same can be said if you have four 12-volt batteries.

Amperage in a golf cart is like the gas tank in your car. It will determine how far you can travel on a single charge in an electric Golf Car. The more amperage in a battery pack, the further you can drive before having to charge.

Let’s take a look at the 5 most common battery packs we see in the market:

Battery Amperage is calculated using Crystal Batteries at a 20 Amp-Hour Capacity Rate on a Single Charge

Calculating the correct charging current or the electric vehicle range

The electric vehicle range has a different charge profile when compared to the other ranges. In addition, the capacity is measured on a 3-hour discharge rate instead of the 10-hour discharge for the other ranges.

The EV range is charged with less power than the regular range. To calculate the charging current, use the following formula:

Battery capacity at a 3-hour discharge rate (can be found in the datasheet) x 0.2C (or 20% of the C3 rate).

For example: 12-EV-120 delivers 120 Ah @C3 (on a 3h discharge) x 0.2C = 24A.

The best choice here would be a 25A charger.

How long do Crystal Golf Cart Batteries last?

It’s important to charge and maintain battery-powered golf carts so that the battery is a healthy and long-lasting product. The battery of your golf cart can last anywhere between five and ten years if it is taken care of properly. A good set of Crystal Golf Cart Batteries should last up to 11 years. A good charger can help with that too and sometimes get more run time as well.

All batteries have different charge requirements due to the variations of lead and alloys used to make the plates, since the pasting density, composition, and the electrolyte solution are critical to the battery operation. Hence it is essential to be followed the charging requirements specified in the user manual of the battery manufacturer to prolong the lifespan of the golf cart batteries.

Golf Cart Battery system delivers all or most of its stored energy once per day over a long period of time.

The batteries are discharged daily between 50% and 80% Depth of Discharge (DoD), followed by a full charge cycle. These charging cycles must occur at the recommended temperature-compensated voltage and current during the bulk or boost phase, followed by a reduced current absorption phase that is then ended with a float top-up phase at a highly reduced charging current to ensure the battery is fully charged and ready for the next long discharge cycle.

The EV battery range has a unique profile to extend battery life and reduce heating. The current of 0.2C (20% of the battery’s 3 hour rated capacity) is reduced in stages to keep battery heating to a minimum. The battery is charged up to 14.7V before shutting off and ending the charge profile. Float-charging the EV is not recommended as it will drastically reduce operating life.

A charger can reduce or even void the warranty of the battery if unsuitable. Mayon offers a genuine custom-designed charger “Crystal Supercharger” to manage the Crystal Battery™ charge cycle. The Crystal Supercharger™ is compatible with nearly every Crystal Battery™ type and bank size. It is a “set and forget” automatic supercharger which will manage the battery bank with the correct voltages, currents, charge times, and purification charges. The Crystal Supercharger™ is intelligent and allows charging with up to 7 stages while providing all charging information through an OLED screen and WiFi monitoring. The Crystal Supercharger™ is considered future-proof, allowing customization and additional features via firmware updates.

By far one of the most critical aspects of a battery is the effects of temperature. A battery is a chemical reactor and in the natural course of charging and discharging battery, heat will be generated. Additionally, ambient temperature has an effect on a battery both in terms of its capacity and the way in which a battery needs to be charged.

Traditional batteries tend to de-rate quickly at higher temperatures and the reason for this is simple chemistry. At 50˚C very acidic electrolytes start to break down. Due to the extremely low levels of acid (<3%) in Crystal Batteries™, our battery can withstand the heat longer and de-rate at a slower rate than traditional lead-acid batteries.

The battery’s cycle life will still be shortened in extreme temperatures. The best application temperature for Crystal Batteries™ is 15°C to 25°C. Every 10°C additional increase in temperature, means an additional 13% reduction (vs. 50% on competing batteries) in cycle life. When the ambient temperature is at a constant 40°C the battery cycle life decreases at 23%.

Using MEWPs In The Tree-Care Industry

Why using aerial work platforms for tree-cutting service?

The correct tree trimming, pruning, and shaping tools and equipment are essential but often bulky when trying to work safely at height. To get people, tools, and equipment to the correct height there are times when traditional working solutions can limit productivity and endanger the arborist.

Aerial work platforms, also known as Mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs), offer a flexible way to reach jobs at height – they are fully mobile and can access areas with restricted space, improve site safety, and save money.

A boom lift is a solid choice to manage tree work from a distance. It gets you exactly where you need to be in seconds, and gives you a safe and stable platform to perform your work. Besides being able to reach high spots, it can be moved around to accommodate position changes for tree pruning. This lift is essentially a platform with a long-jointed crane which is run by a hydraulic lift system, attached to a grounded base.

Crawler scissor lifts are an ideal way to get excellent access to the tree at different heights. Unlike a boom lift, the scissor lift isn’t too flexible. It moves up and down to provide easy and safe access to high trees. With bi-leveling technology, they have the ability to work on steep terrain or uneven surfaces (up to 20 ° longitudinally and 15 ° laterally) like forests.

Spider lifts are lightweight with low ground pressure, especially advantageous when working near garden pathways and manicured lawns.

The truck-mounted platforms are usually stouter and can generally extend to greater heights.

Rotating telehandlers equipped with a tree-cutting attachment (grapple saw) is boosting safety and efficiency for an arborist service working at significant heights cutting trees in a controlled way. This unique combination enables smaller sections of a tree to be removed and cleared away immediately, i.e., directly off the tree into a container or chipper without touching the ground and causing damage from falling wood.

“Whether you are a professional tree worker or a hobby gardener, if you are using a MEWP to work at height, make sure that you complete formal recognised operator training for the correct use of this specialist equipment”

Safety tips for the use of MEWPs in the tree care industry:

To ensure safe operation and avoid incidents or machine damage, it is essential that all operators (employed and self-employed) undergo formal recognized operator training, which includes both theory and practical training and evaluation by a qualified person.

Before beginning work:
  • Check the machine is not damaged, is safe to use, and functioning correctly.
  • Take care when traveling to the work area – avoid the sloping ground.
  • Make sure the ground can support the MEWP at all times.
  • Always use suitable spreader plates under outriggers.
  • Organize and manage segregated drop zones clear of MEWP base and structure.
  • Take necessary precautions to protect the operator from the chainsaw.
While doing the work:
  • Do regular checks to make sure the MEWP is not sinking into the ground.
  • Always wear an appropriate harness and ensure the lanyard is tied off to the designated anchor point inside the platform.
  • Avoid making contact with or snagging branches – take care and use continual observation when raising and lowering the boom.
  • Identify potential hazards such as overhead power lines and take necessary precautions to eliminate the risk of electrocution.
  • Always be observant and operate the MEWP controls smoothly and with care.
  • Never use the MEWP as a crane or secure supporting ropes to any part of the MEWP.
  • Never take fuel up in the platform – always refuel the chainsaw on the ground.
  • Never exceed rated capacities for total load, the maximum number of persons, or wind speed.
After finishing the work:
  • Clear the MEWP of sawdust and debris.
  • Check the machine for any damage – report any damage to the platform immediately.
  • Leave the machine in a safe and secure place with all controls isolated – and keys removed.
  • Report any damage to the owner – do not allow use of MEWP once damaged.

So, verify what piece of equipment best matches your needs before investing in a rental and purchasing.

Truck Mounted Aerial Work Platform For Maintenance And Installation Work of Telecom Networks

Truck Mounted Aerial Work Platform For Maintenance And Installation Work of Telecom Networks

As the necessity for connectivity continues to increase around the world as well as in the Philippines, the carrier that can provide the closest to 100% operation and the shortest downtime, will become the preferred network for many consumers. For that reason, the telecommunications providers likely Liberalization, Globe Telecom, and Smart Communications need to keep their network fully maintained and operational for as close to 100% of the time as possible.

To support the Philippines’ telecom sector, truck-mounted aerial work platforms are used to maintain and install overhead telecommunication networks and the most common brand is Italy-based Socage.

Smarter design makes this truck-mounted platform more highly innovative than other manufacturers. A unique SPEED automatic stabilization system as standard operates even on slopes with a single button, even from the basket. It allows you to obtain a stabilization OK to work in a safe, simple, and fast way.

Socage offers different types of aerial platforms such as articulated type with or without outrigger, double articulated type with or without jib, telescopic type, and telescopic with jib type on different vehicles, in order to fulfill the needs of clients.

The machine can reach a working height of 14m up to 100m, and a horizontal reach max of 43m with 350kg, with a maximum loading capacity of 600kg (6 operators + tools) depending on models.

The most popular model for the telecommunication sector we see is 15m (ForSte 15T SPEED) – 20m (ForSte 20TJ SPEED) – 75m (ForSte 75TJJ) in common telecommunication towers nationwide.

Among its features, the machine has an excellent lateral reach that together with the JIB makes it easier to overcome obstacles at height, and at the same time, it provides versatility and productivity use when working at height.

The basket front support is very common in self-propelled but not used in truck platforms. It allows not having the boom under the basket for more precise position in tight job access without danger of collision. In addition, it increases safety in the possible exits of the operator at height to hook on the mandatory lifeline.

The combination of quality, reliability, productivity, and simplicity of use together with the other features make Socage’s truck-mounted platforms an ideal platform for maintenance and installation work of telecom networks.

With varying positives in each model, you need to carefully assess their options before making an informed decision on what is the best machine for your job. Consult Mayon Machinery – Socage’s Official Dealer in the Philippines to have the best pricing and world-class aftersales services.

Implant Levee – Highly Resilient Disaster Prevention Levee

The Philippines is an island country consisting of some 7,400+ islands and islets and have a coastline of approximately around 37,000 km. However, flood risks due to natural coastal hazards (surges, typhoon waves, and tsunamis) threaten the loss of life and damage to the properties of its residents. To minimize devastating consequences, a disaster prevention levee is an important coastal protection solution by Giken’s Innovative Technologies. Implant Levee that is securely integrated with the Earth is highly resistant to ground displacement caused by the motion dynamic loss of external force such as earthquakes, and tsunamis, thus, serving as a ”resilient” disaster-prevention infrastructure.

Seawall built to protect community in Banganga, Davao Oriental
What’s Implant Levee?

An implant levee is solid and strong against complex disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, and land subsidence. For earthquake protection, an implant-structured pile continuous wall has a secure embedded depth that will not allow any large deformation. Also, as the side floating of liquefied soil is restrained, settlement of the levee body is restrained. Furthermore, by embedding the pile toe to the non-liquefied layer, subsidence of the pile itself will not occur, and the levee height may be maintained. With tsunami, even if the slope face collapses due to overflow, the pile continuous wall with the implant structure will keep its form, and thus maintain its levee function. After an earthquake, tsunami, or other disasters an implant levee may be used as an emergency transit route or drainage work base for fire engines by erecting a coverage plate using the remaining pile heads. This way, it becomes useful in the early restoration of disaster sites.

Coastal Levee Protection Methods

Two methods presented here are commonly applied in coastal levee protection in many countries, including Japan:

Twin Sheet Pile Walls Tubular Pile Wall
Steel sheet piles are installed into the embankment to a depth determined for proper stability and/or cut-off of flow. Also, liquefaction of the levee can be prevented by enclosing it with twin sheet pile walls. Thus, the levee can withstand large external loading and the levee crest can remain in place, even in catastrophic events.
Steel tubular pile wall is a vertical barrier and can be installed in locations where space is scarce, such as urban environments or where the construction of a wide levee is not feasible. The piles are installed into the embankment to a depth determined for proper stability to withstand large dynamic and hydraulic loading.

Giken Reaction Base (GRB) System

Gyropress Method

The press-in machine utilizes reaction force from previously installed piles and performs piling work on top of the piles. With further development based on the principle of “reaction-based mechanism”, “the GRB System” was developed as a press-in system that performs all piling procedures such as; pile transportation, pile pitching, and press-in work, on top of installed piles. The GRB System consists of a Silent Piler in the front, a Power Unit as a power source, a Clamp Crane to pitch piles, and a Pile Runner to convey piles from the storage site.

Gyropress Method installs tubular piles with cutting bits attached on pile toe by the rotary jack-in system and travels on top of piles that are completely installed (completed piles). Gyropress Method allows the installation of tubular piles without prior removal of existing structures and/or obstacles.

Advantages of Implant Levee
  • Flood, Storm Surge, and Tsunami Protection

Functions of the levee can be maintained by increasing its stability.

  • Liquefaction Protection

Functions of the levee can be maintained by the ground enclosure effect.

Application
  • Coastal Protection for the Coastline of the Philippines.
  • Improvement of Port & Harbor.

Press-in Technology (Eco- friendly Piling Works), Construction Revolution and Disaster Recovery Technology

According to United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), Tokyo reported about Silent Piler and its Piling Method. Giken manufactures a piling machine called Silent Piler and offers various construction technologies with the Press-in Method, worldwide. The Silent Piler™ characteristics, including but are not limited to, low noise, no vibration, and compactness, allow working in constrained areas, such as overwater, restricted headroom, and construction sites along with existing buildings.
One of the representative Press-in Methods, the Non-Staging Method, provides benefit to the total construction work as it allows the installation of piles without a temporary stage, and hence reduces the construction cost and period.

Press-in Principle

The Silent Piler grips the previously installed piles with the hydraulically operated Clamps. The next pile is then gripped by the Chuck at the press-in point and jacked into the ground with the static load generated by the hydraulic rams.
During the jacking, penetration resistance comprising of skin friction, toe resistance, and interlock resistance occur. It has the effect to convert a press-in force to a reactive lifting force but it is a greater force, provided by the extraction resistance of the reaction piles that resist this. Consequently, the down-stroke force acts on the pile to penetrate the ground.

Fig. 1 Press-in Principle

Major Features and Advantages

  1. The press-in Method will not generate environmental pollution from construction such as noise and vibration.
  2. Silent Piler is so light and compact that the extent of the piling activities can be minimized.
  3. Pre-fabricated piles produced at the plant are pressed-in directly, so high-quality completed piles can be built with peace of mind.
  4. Multiple sets of compact machines and apparatuses can be used at the same time to greatly shorten the construction period.
  5. Speedy piling progress is available because there are the least limits in working hours even at highly restricted areas and night works.
  6. All machines are so compact that it is not necessary to completely close active traffics.
  7. The performance of piles can be checked and controlled during the construction, allowing high-quality completed piles to be built
